SCHOLARSHIP INFORMATION AND PROCEDURES

INTENT

 To provide financial assistance to qualified applicants in pursuing their educational goals.

APPLICANT CRITERIA
• Be of Hawaiian descent
• Be a resident of Hawaii
• Be a full time student in an accredited  two year community college, four year university in an undergraduate or graduate progror in a vocational or professional  institution
• Must achieve an accumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 when graduating high school.
• Must maintain a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 as a graduate student.
• Priority is given to members ofKHCC in·good standing,  including directly reljrted family member.
• Consideration will be given to students pursuing Hawaiian Studies or related fields with an emphasis inthe promotion  and peipCtuation of long-held traditional Native Hawaiian attitudes and values.
• Preference will be given to graduates of targeted schools within the Kona community and applicants who reside in West Hawaii.
• Applicants will be required to participate in at least two dub functions.

APPLICATION CHECKLIST
In order to process your application, you will need to submit the following  items:
1. A completed KHCC Scholarship Application Form
2. An official and most recent school transcript.  This is sent by the school with their seal.  Copies will not be accepted.
3. A photocopy of your birth certificate indicating Hawaiian descent..
4. First time applicants and repeat transfer applicants, need to send a copy of your Letter of Acceptance from the institution you plan to attend for the fall semester.
5. After approval for a scholarship, send a copy of your fall schedule including your student ID number.
6. Submit an essay to include a short autobiography, goals and career objectives, prior accomplishments, extra-curricular activities, community involvement, contributions you have made to help finance your education, why you believe deserve the scholarship and anything you think is relevant.

The essay should be at least two pages (type-written and double spaced).  It is recommended that you use a font such as Times New Roman and a font size of 12pt. A student who has received a scholarship the previous year(s) is not required to write a new autobiography but must submit a one page essay to include an update of the student’s progress and accomplishments.  The student will also be required to participate in an interview with the Scholarship committee.

PROCEDURES
Unless otherwise stipulated by the Board of Directors and the Scholarship Committee, the deadline for submitting the application form and other documents is April 18.
Scholarships will be awarded in the amount of $500.00 and are for one year only.  You must re-apply each year for continued funding.  The scholarship program opens January 2 – April 18 and awarded for the fall semester of that year.
KHCC will review applications, make a determination, and then notify applicants. Upon receiving the fall class schedule and ID number, a Scholarship Check will be issued and mailed directly to the institution in the name of the scholarship recipient to be used for tuition, fees, books and other educational expenses.
Whenever possible, oral interviews are part of the selection process and are deemed mandatory.  Notification as to the time and date will be given at a mutually convenient location.
Receipt of applications will be acknowledged by either phone or e-mail.  Personal references are encouraged but not required.

AWARD

Scholarships will be presented to the recipients at a general membership  meeting which are held on the first Thursday of every month.
